Celebrating 9 years at Dr. Cowan's Garden
As we come up on the anniversary of 9 years since the founding of Dr. Cowan's Garden, I have been looking back on the original impulse that gave rise to our company. I remember flying to a family vacation in Cape Cod, one of the first times I was going to be together with all my children and grandchildren in a long time. On the flight I was wondering about two things. The first was how to give our family something of a family legacy, something both inspirational and financial. The second was to see if there was any project that we could all work on together, even though we all lived in very different places in the US.
At the time, I had just become the caretaker/head gardener for a large, very productive vegetable garden in Napa, CA and I had recently had dinner at a restaurant called Bar Tartine that specialized in making flavorful and nutritious vegetable powders. This is the background for the idea that since there was very little competition for the production of truly healthy vegetable powders, this is an idea that might have legs. My initial thought was we could sell the powders in my medical practice and maybe at select farmers markets where we each lived.
My family members were very enthusiastic about these ideas and this project and we set out defining goals and roles for each of us. We quickly added another core idea to the business idea which was everything we did would serve the goal of helping our customers get access to the best possible food and very importantly to help provide a market for farmers growing or raising this superior food. Little did we know that 9 years later we could look back and see that we have provided a market for many wonderful small farmers and growers. We could proudly say we have provided our customers with only the finest quality foods and we have provided work for our many dedicated and wonderful sales, marketing and technical support workers. To say this has been a gratifying adventure is truly a huge understatement, but the most important point I wish to make is without our wonderful customers and supporters none of this would have happened. Personally, I am grateful for all those who chose to let us into their homes and kitchens, and who have made DCG a part of their lives. To all of you, I give my profound thanks and hope that you use the occasion of this sale to replenish your favorite items, all grown, packaged and produced with the utmost care.
